Beginner Level  (Non-English)

 

  1. SCAFFOLD: Reduce reading burden
  2. Use lots of visuals and demonstrations
  3. Reduce stress.  
  4. Allow wait time!
  5. Use hands-on activities
  6. Establish consistent classroom routines
  7. Ask yes/no questions
  8. Use cooperative learning
  9. PRINT key words and label pictures
  10. Simplify your vocabulary
  11. Reduce the # of spelling/vocabulary words
  12. Build background & teach American culture
  13. Check for understanding
  14. Repeat and rephrase
  15. Use simplified books
  16. Use books on tape
  17. Record information for ELLs 
  18. Allow ELLs to work on the computer (Rosetta Stone and websites)
  19. Let ELLs copy your or someone’s notes
  20. Use graphic organizers
  21. Print. It is easier to read than cursive
  22. Packet of beginning & adapted content activities

 

Assessment

  • Allow student to point to answer
  • Allow student to illustrate answers
  • Read assessment orally
  • Give extended time
  • Grade group projects
  • Minimize amount of writing by letting ELL label, use word banks, complete graphic organizer
  • Draw pictures to match reading
  • Use pictures to assess vocabulary
  • Limit answer choices
  • Allow bilingual dictionary (if literate in first language)
