Welcome to Houston Middle School’s English as a Second Language (ESL) blog. I am Linda Smith, Houston Middle’s ESL teacher. This is my 7th year teaching ESL. I taught middle school and high school for 14 years before becoming an ESL teacher.
We have 11 students in our ESL program. They represent diverse language groups including Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Korean, and Urdu. Six students have been in the U.S. fewer than three years.
Learning a new language is hard work, especially for English learners who are recent arrivals. They are trying to learn English while trying to keep up in math, science, social studies, and reading. Hopefully, the ideas presented on this blog will help parents, students, and teachers make this process easier. Please let me know your thoughts and concerns.
